SS 304L has 18–20% chromium, 8–12% nickel, and up to 0.03% carbon. It provides tensile strength of ~485 MPa, yield strength of ~170 MPa, and has good elongation (~40%). Its low carbon content prevents intergranular corrosion, particularly post-welding. SS 304L provides satisfactory ductility, formability, and oxidation resistance, and hence is ideal for mildly corrosive conditions and sanitary use.
